For students writing a paper
Search for evidence until the topic finds you.
Thirteen steps for getting from reading widely to a finished paper. Notice where choosing a topic comes: step five, not step one. That is the whole idea.
This one page is for people writing a dissertation or a research paper. If that is not you, Learn is the part of the site you want, and nothing here is needed to use the rest of it.
Why most advice goes wrong
Both ways end in a paper. Only one ends in a good question.
The usual way
- Choose a topic first
- Hunt for evidence that supports it
- Discover it has already been done
- Force the gap to exist
- Write around what you wish you had found
Result: a topic you must defend.
The PSYOURA way
- Read widely, with no topic in mind
- Note what each paper actually says
- Notice the connections between them
- Find what nobody has studied yet
- Let that absence become your title
Result: a topic the literature handed you.
The whole thing, once
Where are you stuck?
Thirteen steps, in five parts. Pick the part you are in and the rest gets out of the way, or read it all from the top if you are starting today. Steps one to four are where the work really is.
These same thirteen steps are on one printable sheet in the materials, if you would rather have them on paper next to you while you work.
The philosophy
Do not choose a topic and then search for evidence. Search for evidence until the topic finds you.
If you start today
Your first week.
do not skip ahead to a title
Everything after step four is craft you can learn as you go.
The Researcher's Mind
Eight sessions built on the flow.
Each one takes a single step and the thing that blocks people at it. They run live, with work done in the room, and every session ends with its sources on the screen.
This is education, not therapy. Everything here is a working framework for research, not a diagnosis and not clinical advice. If being unable to start is happening outside your studies too, that is worth taking to your university counselling service or your GP rather than to a study method.
